District Trustee Board

District Trustee Board

The Trustee Board is a team of volunteers who work together to make sure Scouts is run safely and legally.

Together, Trustees make sure the charity is well managed, risks are assessed and mitigated, buildings and equipment are in good working order, and everyone follows legal requirements and Policy, Organisation and Rules (POR). Their support helps other volunteers run a fantastic programme that gives young people skills for life (and experiences they’ll remember forever).

Bio’s

Nic Rowe – Chair of the Trustee Board 2025

I’m Nic, Chair of the Trustee Board since 2025.

I’ve got a lot out of Scouting, both as a young and not-so-young person. As a trustee, I am now doing my best to ensure that many others can benefit from all Scouting has to offer. I’m still enjoying it, and even now gaining Skills for Life.

I’ve had various Scouting roles over the years, starting in 1963 when we were called Wolf Cubs and Boy Scouts. I also had various leader roles in groups and district. In 2016, I hung up my uniform and became a trustee, initially due to my involvement with Ullesthorpe Scout Campsite. I am still on the campsite Management, Maintenance and Warden Teams.

Now retired, my working life was in local government, mainly for Leicestershire County Council in various highway related management roles.

My interests outside Scouting include ballroom dancing, caravanning and DIY (not usually at the same time!).

. . . and it’s spelled “Nic” through ignorance. When I learned to spell, nobody suggested it should have a ‘k’ and there’s no ‘k’ in Nicholas, so Nic is what I wrote and how it stayed.

Robert Row — Trustee & Lead Volunteer

I began volunteering in Scouting almost 20 years ago, starting as Chair of Broughton Astley, then Group Scout Leader, and later District Commissioner for South Leicestershire (now Lead Volunteer). I’m proud of how our volunteers have strengthened and grown the district in spite of the Covid dip; we now support 800 young people aged 4–18, including over 220 girls, alongside 280 amazing adult volunteers.

I grew up in Bristol as a Cub and later a Sea Scout — long before Squirrels, Beavers, or even girls were involved! I returned to Scouting in 2008 when my children joined, leading the Broughton Astley Executive Committee (now trustee board). Within a few years we’d welcomed girls, doubled the number of sections and became one of Leicestershire’s biggest groups with a really engaged and supported team of volunteers.

My career has always been based in the Midlands, with roles at Jaguar Cars and Caterpillar. For nearly 18 years I have been working as a business-improvement consultant and trainer, often drawing on the problem-solving, teamwork and leadership skills I first discovered as a young scout.

Outside of work and Scouts, I enjoy being with the family and also getting away whether camping, campervanning or short breaks, and a bit of photography too. I also volunteer elsewhere in the community and have recently taken up woodturning to learn about the tools, wood and techniques to avoid injuring myself!

My current Scout role is ex-officio, giving me automatic membership of the trustee board. This means the trustees can (and do!) challenge me to ensure everything we do is safe, compliant and sustainable across South Leicestershire.

Being a trustee is flexible, rewarding and a great way to help our volunteers and ultimately the young people gain #SkillsForLife.

Ian Paterson – Trustee started September 2024, appointed Treasurer in August 2025 (term 3 years).

Hi, I’m Ian. I spent 30 years as a Chartered Accountant in Professional Services in London, helping clients with a variety of corporate finance activities. In 2011, I set up my own executive coaching and leadership development consultancy. I continue to work with partners and others, helping them to improve their own and the team’s performance.

In addition to being a Trustee, I lead the 14-24 Team in our District. This role includes Explorers, Network, Young Leaders and DofE. I have always had a passion for Japanese martial arts, mainly karate, but also Aikido and Kendo. I am currently training hard for my second black belt in karate.

Julian Welch – Trustee started October 2025 (term 3 years)

Hi, I’m Jules. I work in insurance, where I’m responsible for proposition development and marketing. I have experience across marketing, sales, and bid propositions, and I enjoy bringing strategy and creativity together to drive results.

Outside of work, I practice various forms of martial arts. I joined the Board of Trustees to reconnect with the scouting community and contribute again after many years away.

Alfie Bradley – Youth Lead

My Name is Alfie Bradley. I am the District’s Youth Lead which means I am tasked with ensure young people get a voice in the leadership of scouts. This also gives me a seat on the trustee board to be an advocate for the young people in scouting. I have been involved in scouts as a Child and leader for 5 Years now alongside studying a degree in Theatre and Performance at the Uni of Warwick. Scouts is a place for me to learn new skills in leadership and to give opportunities to all the children involved. At current I am the youngest member of the trustee board and the wider district teams.

Thomas Craven – Trustee

My name is Thomas Craven, and I have been involved in Scouting my whole life with The Scout Association. I currently volunteer as a Cub Leader and enjoy helping young people learn new skills, build confidence and have fun. Having benefited greatly from Scouting when I was younger, I am keen to give back and support young people experiencing Scouting today.

Alongside my volunteering, I am currently studying engineering, where I am developing strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Outside of Scouting and my studies, I have a strong interest in the outdoors and motorsport, both of which reflect my enjoyment of adventure, practical skills and teamwork.

As a member of the District Trustee Board, I support the district with risk management to help ensure activities can be delivered safely and responsibly for everyone involved

Anna Ranson – Trustee

I am new to Scouting however I have been a member of Girlguiding since 1991 and held various roles including a young member, young leader and Leader. I recently ended my role as Division Commissioner for Blaby and Lutterworth and Trustee for Leicestershire Girlguiding. I am enjoying sharing my knowledge and experience with Scouting
