Our First Virtual Sleepover

We had our first virtual troop camp this weekend – Friday night into Saturday, and it was absolutely brilliant. As leaders we enjoyed it, and it was obvious the Scouts enjoyed it, but what was even better was some of the feedback afterwards.

As with any new method of delivering Scouting, I really wasn’t sure how it was going to go. I wasn’t sure what was going to work, what wouldn’t work, what might be well received, what might fall flat. In the end, some of the things we tried didn’t work as well as I’d hoped, but to be honest, it didn’t really matter. The Scouts filled in the gaps left by technological failings with their enthusiasm.

I hadn’t realised quite how much something like this was needed. I think the Scouts appreciated just being able to get together, albeit in a virtual space. It’s given me plenty of ideas for future virtual camps, both during the current lockdown as well as potentially after it, in combination with ‘real life’ camps.
